Carved Woodblock Print

I based my print off of a charcoal Marky Mark Drawing. In my opinion this was a good decision because it allowed me to experiment with the carving tools in ways I never had before. Crosshatching with the tools was much harder than I expected but it was rewarding in the end.

Glass/Wood Print

I enjoyed the process involved in printing natural wood. The contrast between grain and glass imprints is very pleasing to the eye. A difficulty I came across in this print was having to make multiple prints before I got the blackest black.

Final Project

Artist Inspiration:

Maud Vantours

I incorperated Vantours’s use of triangles in my collage on the ceiling.

Josef Albers

I incorperated Albers’s use of folding paper in the small zig-zag shapes along the strings and also in the crumbling of the paper.

Ruth Asawa

I incorperated Asawa’s use of the vertical stucture in my piece. I was fond of this technique because it creates tension which is something I strive for in my artwork.

Progress Updates

I originally wanted my final piece to replicate my original practice excersize. After researching artists I decided to ditch this plan and push myself to get out of my comfort zone.

After my research I decided to get the hardest part overwith. I created my Vantours inspired collage on the ceiling. I chose the stonehenge paper because I knew it was sturdy and would not allow the glue to show through. My decision to add color was to tie in the top of the work with the bottom.

Next I created these bunches of paper by tying a string tightly around my newsprint prints. I chose the newsprint because I knew it would fold easily and show the most amount of wrinkles. At this stage I also added sumi ink in the shadows of the fold to increase contrast between light and dark values.

The next step was to add in the pink guache. I chose guache to reflect the materials that we used in See Lab. The pink was added to the medium/gray values to show that they are not dark or light. I determined the values by shining a light on the paper.

Finally I added my original woodblocks to show the process that this project entailed. While painting the glass woodblock I discovered forms within the imprints and played with that. Then I played with the guache and the string to emphasize that the piece was united even though they werent physically toching.

Activation Time Project

IMG_E6407

This was the first assignment for this project; my name is on the top, “Abigail”. I thought this task was very creative and I enjoyed the fact that something that looked so abstract had meaning.

IMG_E6409

This was my wingspan. I enjoyed this assignment because I like how the photograph turned out.

IMG_E6410

At this point in the project I began to get really involved because I started to enjoy the way the wall was coming together. This particular assignment was my favorite out of all of the days becuase I was really eager to get a good photograph with an interesting angle. I am happy with how the photo turned out.

This was my groups recreation of the OK Go music video. I had never seen the video before until Dan suggected it and I found it fascinating. If I could go back to this assignment I would suggest that we arranged ourselves in a way that made it look like we were in a corner like the real video suggests.

This was the last assignment where we all discussed the project and graded the group to our left. It was interesting to see the different ways one set of instructions could be taken.

Sol Lewho?

This piece was from the set of instructions that another peer wrote. I enjoyed this and I drew with oil pastels. One step I found particularly interesting was “characterize the piece”. I incorperated this instruction by adding the eyeball.

IMG_E6402

This was drawn with oil pastels and I chose to work with complementary colors. The subject matter is a medium circle with a line tanget to the circle. There is also a triangle that intersects the circle.

IMG_E6403

This was the german set of instructions and I thought I did it correctly but when I got to class everyone elses looked very different than mine. I guess you can’t trust google translate. I used oil pastels and complementary colors.

IMG_E6404

This was the big square cut in half with one half matte black and the other half shiny black. For the matte side I used charcoal and for the shiny side I used charcoal with a shiny finishing spray. On the right side is a circle with 500 straight lines and 500 curvy lines.

IMG_E6405

This is the 50 point drawing where all the points have to be connected with 50 lines. I used pencil for this drawing.

IMG_E6406

For this piece I used oil pastel. This was a square on one side with a triangle that has one of its pints in the center of the square. Then there is a circle not touching either shape with a tangent line that crosses through both the triangle and the square. In the circle there is a smaller circle that has a tangent line that hits a corner of the square. For this piece i used red and a tint of red.

Marky Mark

30 Minute

                      Guache                           Charcoal                        Colored Pencil

30 Minute Guache: I had a lot of fun with this piece. I used a spoon, fork, and a knife as mark making tools. I found that the fork was especially sucessful because I could cross hatch with it. The spoon was annoying to work with because it created many drips but I learned to accept it and let it become apart of the work. The knife acted as a pallet knife and I enjoyed this technique.

30 Minute Charcoal: I enjoyed the 30 minute charcoal drawing because I am normally very precise when I work with charcoal. This assignment allowed me to let loose and focus on filling up the page. I believe this benefitted me because my charcoal pieces normally end up very line heavy. Although I did use line quite a bit I can recognize improvement in this piece.

30 Minute Colored Pencil: This was my first time seriously working with colored pencil and if i’m being honest I hated it. I found filling up the page frusterating and I was not happy with the outcome. Blending was difficult for me as well I stuggled to accuratley dipict color.

1 Hour

                      Charcoal                            Guache                         Colored pencil

1 Hour Charcoal: I got lost in this piece. I really enjoyed creating it. I used the technique of filling up the page that I learned in the 30 minute charcoal drawing. Then I proceded to add detail. I believe this piece is sucessful is showing accurate value becuase it has a good range of light to dark. I would like to recreate this piece for my woodblock print.

1 Hour Guache: This piece was fun to make, mostly because my mark making tool was quite unique. I took an old sock and filled it with paper towels. This allowed my marks to be smooth without and streaks. One disadvantage to this mark making tool was that I had a hard time varying line weight.

1 Hour Colored Pencil: As i’ve stated before colored pencil was a struggle for me. I tried to make the hour long drawing better by deciding to pay more attention to detail. In the previous drawing I was so anxious about filling the page that I didnt learn anything significant about the new medium. I am much more satisfied with the hour long colored pencil drawing dispite the fact that it is not complete.

3 Hours

Black Guache                                     Colored Guache (No Black)

3 Hour Black Guache: I’m the kind of person who cannot sit still for long. I am constantly stepping back from my art work and splitting up the time into chunks. I was planning on doing that for this piece but it was so satisfying that I didn’t want to stop. The mark mading tool I made was 3 wooden pencils tied together with a hairband. I used the eraser end to stamp the black guache onto the paper. It was interesting to watch how value appeared without blending at all. If I could change somthing about this piece I would not make such harsh outlines in the beginning.

3 Hour Colored Guache (No Black): This piece was the opposite of the Black guache. I had absolutley no control in this work. I wanted to chanllenge myself by using an extreamly difficult mark making tool. I put a condom over my hand and finger painted. It was frusterating because the guache kept slipping off the condom and I had to attempt to pick up guache multiple times before it actually made it to the paper. Although this was a very interesting experience it’s unlikely that I will pair guache with condoms again.

Light Reading

Related image
I loath the sickly, yellow glow of mans fire.
How it paints the walls of his dwelling with unnatural light.
He has forgotten me.
Now that he can see in his darkness,
he has no reason to leave it.
Interpretation:
I enjoyed this poem because it enhances a common belief that darkness is to be associated with sadness and sunshine is to be associated with happiness. I Believe this correlation illustrates an accurate depiction of light in a non-literal sense.

Staking the Claim

IMG_4932.JPG

I chose to plant my, final flag in the trash. Our group had a very difficult time with the printmaking process today. It all started when we realized the person who had our flag design had overslept and we had to remake a new design. This already put us one step behind. Then we realized the new design wouldn’t work because our stencil was too small and this caused it to tear when we squeegeed. Now we were two steps behind. It was time to make a third design. I chose to document out flag in the trash can because I do not want my experience today define how I feel about screen printing, therefore I threw it away.

Story of the week

This week in foundations I learned how important one member of the group can be. This weekend most of the foundations students went on a trip to new york city. Out of my group of 10, only 4 stayed behind. During that weekend our group was supposed to “rebuild our territory”, our objective was to rebuild Powell. Well, since 6 members were away every single but of work that any 4 of us could do was very helpful. I’m glad we all decided to work on it together, even if that meant 6 hours straight of doing the same thing over and over. I created so many bricks out of cardboad and paint that day. Joe made a mail box. Payton came up with creative ideas along with creating a “tile” floor, and Logan made amazing picture boards. This was my favorite sculpture to build so far.
